Leaves

Yes leaves can be reused and recycled.

REUSE

  • Leafmould is formed from decaying leaves and produces an invaluable soil conditioner.
  • The Royal Horticultural Society [RHS] provides instructions on how to make leaf mould.

RECYCLED
Where?

Leaves can be recycled in 2 ways;

  • For £52 a year you can sign up to Brighton and Hove's Garden Waste collection. You will be given a 240 litre wheelie bin for your garden waste which will be collected every two weeks.You can include;

    • Grass cuttings
    • Hedge cuttings
    • Leaves
    • Plants
    • Tree cuttings
    • Twigs
  • Alternatively take them to the Brighton Household Waste & Recycling site on Wilson Avenue or the Hove Household Waste & Recycling site on the Old Shoreham Road. See here for exact locations and opening times. For more details contact City Clean on 01273 292929.

How?

  • Make sure you remove plastic bags, string and other bindings.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The best quality leafmould is produced from the leaves of oak, beech or hornbeam.
  • Like peat, it is a soft, inviting medium for plant roots. It's kind to seedlings and a great place for them to start life.
  • For older plants it will seal in the moisture and, if spread thickly enough, will suppress weeds as a mulch. It will take heavy soil and make it light again.
